Morganton and Lake James, North Carolina

Two years ago I won a gift certificate for a meal at Murray's in Morganton, NC at a motorcycle rally. It had lain in a drawer since then virtually forgotten. It had been a while since I had been out of the house and cabin fever was beginning to set in so I decided to grab the certificate and frau and head to Morganton. Murray's was a nice little restaurant that surprised me. I ordered the chicken fried steak and I normally do not do that outside of Texas. Texans are the masters of frying non-chicken meat as if it were chicken. A lot of places outside of Texas put a brown gravy on the steak and it really should be a white pepper gravy know as "sawmill" gravy. The chicken fried steak I had at Murray's was the best I have ever had outside of Texas. (Don't even get me going on North Carolina barbeque. It is vile stuff.)

Afterwards, on the way home, we stopped by and saw Lake James State Park.  We had camped there years ago and it had changed a lot.  There is a new area called Paddy's Creek and it looked as though it had all been created in the last few years.  It was a nice spot and I am sure we will return.

There has not been a lot of traveling going on but some rather large trips are on the horizon.  In March I will travel to Texas for a week and in the summer I will be crossing the Atlantic on a freighter to Europe.  Stay tuned and check back often!
